Rapsody is following in the footsteps of the late Nipsey Hussle by using his Proud 2 Pay business model to release vinyl versions of her upcoming album.

In addition to announcing her distribution intentions for Please Don’t Cry on Wednesday, March 27, the North Carolina native used the occasion to honor the precedent Nip set a little over ten years ago when he sold his Crenshaw record for $100 a pop.

Rapsody wrote, “Nipsey created legacy in so many ways.” “His 2013 Proud 2 Pay campaign came to mind when I sat down to think about this season of art and the valuation of it in the music business.” It confirmed to our ardent fans—who perceive and experience our work on a deeper level—that it is brilliant, exceptional, and priceless. Hussle once said, “Always by choice, never by force.”

“Some perceive crude sketches when they look at a Basquiat, while others see a multimillion dollar work of artistic brilliance on canvas. What makes them Proud 2 Pay is in the eyes and ears of the beholder. Furthermore, I find it really fascinating that new platforms are using this approach in this day and age. However, it was crucial for me to give credit to Nipsey, the creative force that inspired me. Black Sam revealed that he wanted all creatives to have access to this platform and economic model.”

“Thus, I’m appreciative that #Proud2Pay allows us to carry that out, keep building on this tradition, develop deep connections with our fans—whom I like to refer to as the Loved Ones—and honor the importance of creation and the arts.”
