Ne-Yo‘s baby mama, Monyetta Shaw-Carter, has stepped forward to address the controversy stemming from the singer’s recent comments about the transgender community and gender transition.

In an interview with TMZ on Tuesday (August 22), Ne-Yo’s baby mama clarified her position on the matter, making it clear that she doesn’t share Ne-Yo’s views, despite the fact that they co-parent their children.

While acknowledging Ne-Yo’s right to have his own opinions, Shaw-Carter distanced herself from his statements, emphasizing that “Those views are his.”

She highlighted that her stance stands in contrast, as she expressed her support for the queer community even if Ne-Yo doesn’t share the same sentiment.

The controversy began when Ne-Yo’s comments on the topic of gender transition were brought up in a VladTV interview with Gloria Velez. The R&B veteran questioned the idea of children being able to “choose their genders.”

Ne-Yo later posted a statement on social media in early August, offering his “deepest apologies” for the remarks. However, he followed up with a more nuanced perspective in a subsequent post, explaining exactly what he was apologizing for.

While Ne-Yo acknowledged that he normally doesn’t care about public opinions, he stressed his right to hold his viewpoint on the matter in a video statement.

He also reiterated his respect for the LGBTQIA+ community, even as he maintained his skepticism about allowing children to make life-altering decisions.

Expressing his commitment to educate himself on the subject, Ne-Yo confirmed that he would still stand by his belief that he couldn’t condone letting children make such significant choices.

Also he concluded by reiterating his right to voice his opinion and emphasizing that he wouldn’t be bullied into apologizing.

In his own words…

“AGREEING TO DISAGREE IS NOT A DECLARATION OF WAR… But this isn’t even a discussion until they are MENTALLY MATURE ENOUGH to have such a discussion. Period. Point blank. Whatever.

Y’all do y’all, imma do me and we can agree to disagree and coexist PEACEFULLY. LOVE IS THE ONLY TRUE POWER.” Ne-Yo stated.

The original comments that sparked the controversy questioned parents’ approach to transgender kids and whether it was appropriate to allow young children to make life-altering decisions about their gender.

Ne-Yo’s sentiments provoked a debate about the age and maturity at which such discussions should occur.

Amidst the debate, Shaw-Carter’s response underscores the complexity of the issue and the range of opinions surrounding it.
