Early Years

On October 26, 1986, Schoolboy Q was born Quincy Matthew Hanley on a U.S. Army base in Wiesbaden, West Germany. His mother is African-American, while his father is Honduran-American. According to Schoolboy Q, he started writing when he was sixteen, but he didn’t take music seriously until he was twenty-one. He joined Top Dawg Entertainment, an indie record label, and met Ab-Soul and Jay Rock, future members of the Black Hippy band, while recording at the label’s House of Pain studio. He signed with Top Dawg Entertainment the next year after releasing the mixtape “Schoolboy Turned Hustla” on the G.E.D. Inc. label in July 2008.
