Drake Wins Legal Battle Against UMG Over Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” Controversy

Drake has scored a significant legal victory against Universal Music Group (UMG) in his ongoing lawsuit. The rapper accused UMG of artificially boosting Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us”, alleging that the label helped spread a false and malicious narrative against him. The case has been a major talking point in the hip-hop world, and recent court rulings have favored Drake.

Drake’s Allegations Against UMG

In January 2025, Drake filed a lawsuit against UMG, claiming the label manipulated streaming and promotional efforts to amplify “Not Like Us”. He argues this was done to damage his reputation by reinforcing harmful accusations. UMG responded by filing a motion to stay discovery, alleging Drake was seeking confidential internal documents, including Kendrick Lamar’s contract details.

Judge Denies UMG’s Motion

On June 30, Judge Jeannette Vargas rejected UMG’s request, stating that a discovery stay was not justified. According to Inner City Press, the judge ruled:

“I cannot find on that basis that a stay of discovery is warranted. There is only one defendant, which weighs against staying discovery. UMG can object to individual requests, but the motion to stay discovery is denied.”

She also set a motion hearing for June 30, while questioning whether six months of discovery was too aggressive.

Drake’s Legal Team Fires Back

Drake’s attorney, Michael Gottlieb, responded strongly to UMG’s failed attempt to delay the case.

“It is unsurprising that UMG is desperate to avoid discovery. This motion is a ploy to delay producing documents and communications that UMG hopes to keep hidden. If UMG has nothing to hide, they should not object to discovery.”

Following the judge’s ruling, Gottlieb doubled down:

“Now it’s time to see what UMG was so desperately trying to hide.”

UMG’s Controversial Moves & Drake Fans’ Reactions

Amid the lawsuit, UMG recently announced a partnership with e-commerce platform SendOwl, allowing them to sell digital products and report sales independently. This has sparked suspicions among Drake fans, with many questioning whether the industry is being manipulated against certain artists.

Drake’s latest court victory puts pressure on UMG to release internal documents, which could reveal behind-the-scenes dealings in the music industry. As the case unfolds, hip-hop fans will be closely watching how it impacts both Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s ongoing rivalry.
