Chris Brown has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery and Ample Entertainment, accusing them of defamation over their 2024 documentary Chris Brown: A History of Violence. Filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on January 21, the complaint alleges that the documentary falsely portrays Brown as a serial rapist and sexual abuser, despite his never having been found guilty of any sex-related crimes.

The lawsuit, prepared by attorneys Arnold Shokouchi and Levi McCathern, claims the documentary’s creators knowingly promoted false and defamatory information to boost views and profits, violating journalistic standards. Brown’s legal team states they provided evidence proving the claims in the documentary were false, but Warner Bros. Discovery and Ample Entertainment proceeded with its release regardless.

Central to the case is a woman identified as Jane Doe, who made sexual assault allegations against Brown in the documentary. She is named as a defendant, with the lawsuit alleging she fabricated her claims for fame and financial gain. Brown’s attorneys argue that the woman’s allegations were discredited in a prior lawsuit she filed against him in January 2022. That case was dismissed in August of the same year after text messages uncovered by a Miami Beach Police detective reportedly revealed her dishonesty, leading to the withdrawal of her legal team.

The lawsuit describes the documentary’s allegations as “sensationalized, unfounded, and defamatory,” emphasizing that they caused significant harm to Brown’s reputation, career, and business opportunities. Brown’s legal team further accuses the production companies of ignoring evidence that contradicted their narrative and disregarding journalistic ethics.

In addition to seeking justice for the alleged defamation, Brown is requesting $500 million in damages, with a portion of the amount pledged to support survivors of sexual abuse. The lawsuit marks Brown’s attempt to clear his name and hold the responsible parties accountable for what he claims is a deliberate attack on his character.

This high-profile case underscores the complexities surrounding defamation claims, media responsibility, and the impact of public narratives on individuals’ reputations and careers.
